Instead of a G180z you could pick up a tired G161Z for next to nothing, then get the block bored out and fit G180Z pistons and rings into it. If a full rebuild is planned that would be the option I would choose. The G180Z pistons will bolt straight up to the G161Z conrods.

G180Z blocks were also stamped with a different engine number arrangement, sometimes this can cause problems when taking the car for inspection at the RTA. Using a G161Z you wont have those kind of issues.

g161z out to g180z

Post by nick »

virtual-r yer i thought that idea too g161z out to g180z but the stroke is diffrent
g161z=82.00mm x75.00mm x 4 =1584cc
g180z=84.00mm x 82.00mm x 4 =1817cc
specs from acl bearing book which states bearings same size.
so to make it 1800cc i need a g180z crank as well
as i know of a block that has a u/s head
it might be the go as i have a friend in a machine shop he said some thing about 2lt out of g161z block using conrods from a 4zc1 had been done by a work mate of his.
i'll ask him to night

I've got a G180Z here in pieces however it would cost a fair bit to send over to you in south australia. It spun a bottom end bearing awhile ago so the crank would need to be cleaned up, and it also lost the bottom of a connecting rod as my friend had it in the boot of his gemini, which also had about a 30cm rust hole in the floor lol.

Someone behind him on the freeway would have got a bad surprise lol

I've never heard of using a G180 crank in a G161 while retaining G series pistons. Would have thought the pistons would extend out the top of the block.

I know of a setup similar you can use for turbo engines, in that case you get some VL RB30ET pistons modified to fit on G161Z conrods, then use the 1.8 crank in the G161z block and it sits almost perfectly level.

Let me know what you find out :)
